The Optimist Club of Solano County is encouraging area students to contemplate the phrase “Optimism Should be a Priority” as part of the Optimist International Essay Contest for 2014-2015.

The Optimist Club will judge the local students’ essays, based on the theme of “Optimism Should be a Priority” and determine the top winners. Essays must contain at least 700 words but no more than 800 words. Winners will receive $100 and a club certificate and the winning essays will be sent to the district level where a $2,500 college scholarship is available for the top district winner.

“Young students today have fresh ideas about the world and their future,” Club President Christina Baird said. “As Optimists, it is our goal to encourage them and do what we can to bring out the best in each of them. This gives a wonderful opportunity to tap into their creativity and pursue possible scholarships at the same time.”

The Optimist Club of Solano County has been participating in the Optimist Essay Contest for 17 years and has been active in the community since 1996. Other programs and service projects that the Club is involved in include supporting the Opportunity House with the Festival of Trees, and hosting the Miniature Golf Tournament.
