Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday

I just heard this song, Strange Fruit for the first time today. This song has a rich story behind it, written 1939 by Abe Meeropol. Billie Holiday was hesitant at first to sing the song for fear of retaliation. The depth in her eyes in this performance is mesmerizing as she sings the soul out of the words. I couldn’t imagine living back then, even though I think my upbringing was hard. My Chapter, Joliet in How Far Will I Run shares my experience with Racism and although it was non violent, the hatred felt was scary. Humanity has progressed incrementally from the ignorances of the past. Awareness is our only savior.
